Moxie's Grill - Broadway & Burrard

Found parking across street from Future Shop, paid $2 for 60 minutes of parking (other options were 10c for 3 min. or 25c for 7.5 min). Bought nothing at FS, lots time left on the meter. Since I parked in front of Moxie's, decided to try it out.

It's a huge space with outdoor sidewalk patio, staffed by lots of nice waitresses. Since I'm on a beef dip ($8.99) kick, that's what I ordered but I wasn't thinking and said yes to basil dip (which cost an extra 50 cents). Big Life amber $5.49. Decent beef dip, better than Malone's.

Joey Tomato's - Coquitlam

Dropped by to check out Steve Nash and the Suns vs one of the LA teams on TV. Had the $8.49 hot wings (more salty than anything), but the female bartenders and waitresses were hotter. 3 beers late, (Bass pale ale, Stella Artois, honey lager), I realized that their formula worked. (TV sports + salty wings + hot waitresses = lighter wallet).

Oh yeah, Nash and the Suns win.

The Keg - Ironwood Mall, Richmond

Maybe it was the pre-Mother's Day crowd but, man was it ever busy and loud at the Keg on a Saturday night. Haven't been to a Keg in over a year. Last time was for a dinner before a stag and that happened twice within weeks.

Over the din of the nine family members at our table, I ordered the filet mignon wrapped with bacon. Don't ever remember ordering it specifically before, but of course, I've had it many times. When it arrived, it looked kinda... small. $25.95 plus potato with all the fixings. I should have ordered the prime rib.

The starter escargots were nice. As was the beer - old reliable Kokanee.

Duffin's Donuts - 41st & Knight

I am a food snob. That realization dawns on me - that I'm downright picky in what and where I eat. That's the only thing I can think of after eating at this place. It's part of the Duffin's Donut franchise but there's such a mish-mash of food styles here, you don't know what's what. Trying to be all things to all people. There's just no focus.

You can have donuts with your coffee or with chinese food or how about a mexican torte or a vietnamese sub sandwich. I've heard of fusion but this is ridiculous. This is a restaurant, not a food court.

Maybe it was the fact that we ate there after finishing hockey at 1 am that framed my frown. It's opened all night long so the slow turnaound meant that the chinese food was only a couple hours old. I ended up ordering the vietnamese chicken torte for $3.50. It was OK.

This place could be an acquired taste and it's probably different in the morning.

Yaohan Food Fair - No. 3 Road, Richmond

If you want to get a great food deal, you can't go wrong with the Food Fair at the Yaohan Centre. Lots of variety if you like cheap Asian food. The deals are incredible. I had the 2 items + noodle dish for $4.75, which turned out to be chow mein + chicken + beef. (3 items + noodle or rice was $5.25.)

It's even cheaper after 8 or 9pm when they have to clear out all the food. Lots of traffic means the turnover is fast and the food fresh.

It's like another world there with food ranging from congee to Hainanese chicken, from mango pudding to wonton noodle.

Memphis Blue BBQ - Broadway & Granville

If you like the blues from the Delta, a casual atmosphere, BB King on the sound system and on the wall, then this is your place. If you're a carnivore, like feasting on meat, plied with lots of BBQ sauce, then this is your place. If you're a vegan, then maybe not.

It's small - only ten tables. Apparently the BC Lions offensive line eat here. Don't know how they can fit five to eight 300-pounders here, but they have. Don't know if I want to be there when that happens.

This time they weren't there. I had the pulled rib sandwich with BBQ sauce plus a root beer ($13.05). It was not bad but I wasn't really full. The serving was kind of small. Also, are there are any other kinds of sauces, other than BBQ? After a while, everything tastes the same.

One time, we had the big platter, which contained virtually everything on their menu and that was a mountain of a meal. We became mountain-like afterwards. We couldn't move.

It's a good place to fulfill your intake of meat for the year. For fun, bring a vegan.

Galing Galing - Broadway & Granville

Woke up Sunday very late. Decided to check out some CDs/DVDs at the Future Shop on West Broadway. Had a late lunch at Galing Galing - a cafeteria-like place serving filipino cuisine.

I had the $7.29 2-item combo - pan fried noodle (pancit) and squid, which was very good.
It's a bit more expensive than other asian food court items. Cause that's what this is - a single food court serving filipino cuisine.

Next time, I would go earlier.

Stepho's - Davie & Thurlow

I love this place. It's relatively small and intimate. Greek music fills the air. People enjoying themselves, soaking in the atmosphere. You feel Zorba or Anthony Quinn might join your table at any time. (Of course that can't happen, cos' they're dead.)

Still, this is a fun place.

I almost always have the small lamb souvlaki. $7.95, which comes with rice pilaf, roast potato and greek salad. Bread and tzatziki sauce make it a killer meal. And it's great value, a very good bang for your buck.
