Sciue - Pender & Howe

Italian style bakery, serving bread with pizza topping - I believe I had the Pane Romano Salmone, which was filled with smoked salmon, cheese. $3.00 per 100 gram. Actually, the menu is fairly extensive. Check out www.sciue.ca.

The good - patio sitting, ideal for people watching.
The bad - not a fan of the cafeteria-like line-up, don't care for waiting in line but this place is quite popular.
The ugly - a couple days later, saw some Tourette-syndrome guy swearing up a storm in front of the bakery and he had to be strong-armed off the premises.

#9 Restaurant - Landsdowne Mall, Richmond

Man, is this place busy. Expect long line-ups at this restaurant at Landsdowne even at 8pm Saturday after the mall has closed for a couple hours. Also, I kept on bumping into people I knew. They come here after landing at YVR or they go here for a meal before they hit the Richmond street market.

And it's extra hard if you bring half your team after a day-long softball tournament. You have to break off into 2 separate tables.

The $52-meal for 4 was selected plus one extra dish. We had corn soup, lemon chicken, mah po tofu, prawns & broccoli plus house chow mein.

Even though we were hungry, we couldn't finish it all.

Penny Lane Pub - 41st & Main

A sleeve of Caffray cream ale sleeve $4.75.
A pound of schmelvin (rock salt/lemon) wings - $6.90.
A pitcher of Alexander Keith - $15.75
A post-softball BS session in a nice little neighbourhood pub - priceless.

Angel Cake Cafe - 43rd and Fraser

New place for me for our post-volleyball meal. A Hong Kong style restaurant, only with more of a Malaysian slant. You see nasi goreng and the like on the menu. I had the $5.75 satay with instant noodles in soup. (I know, one could almost make this at home.)

The others all ordered a prawn-filled spaghetti dish for about $8.25. The serving is huge with 8 prawns but the sauce appears to be very rich, maybe a bit too rich. Might not be good for the mid-section or for one's cholesterol count.

Update: Been there several times now, have ordered the spaghetti dish twice - much too rich for one person. All that energy and sweat spent diving for volleyballs; all that exercising out the window with just one dish.

Now the question is do I play volleyball for the exercise or as an excuse to eat? (Have to remember my mandate - to eat 1000 unique meals without gaining more than 10 pounds.)

Bouzyos Taverna - Commercial Drive

After hiking the Grouse Grind, one can work up a healthy appetite. Add the fact that the World Cup consolation match between Germany and Portugal was on, then it was a no-brainer to look for a restaurant on the Drive.

The Drive is Commercial Drive, a north-south boulevard on Vancouver's east side where many World Cup fanatics gather to watch the game blasting out on TVs from every coffee house and restaurant.

The Drive was alive on that Saturday, but not as hyper as it would be the next day for the final.

The Drive is now very much multicultural. Sushi restaurants fight for space with Greek and Italian restaurants. Pizza joints vs vegetarian places, coffee houses vs juice bars.

We decided to try Bouzyos Taverna right in the middle of the Drive. I had the lamb souvlaki for $11 and a pale ale for $5.75. My colleague had the lamb wrap ($10) and beer. The atmosphere was unbeatable like the German defence.

Compared to Stepho's - the lamb souvlaki came skewer-less, the meat was about the same, the salad seem fresher but there was no bread to dip into the tzitki sauce. It was a great day to be alive.

There are so many restaurants on the Drive, that one could do at least 100 meals here.

Northern Meixi - Crystal Mall - Metrotown area

Located on the 2nd floor of Crystal Mall in Burnaby is this food court serving various asian foods. At the Northern Meixi Restaurant, you can have 5 steamed dumplings (or siu lone bows) for $3.50. The fried dumplings are the same price, while the watercress dumpling noodle in soup cost $4.50.

One cautionary note : watch how you bite into the dumplings or else the soup/juice will squirt out all over you.

Milestones - Whistler

It was unexpectedly hot at Whistler. Headed for a cooler spot at Milestones and an ice cold beer. Also had an Italian sausage frittata ($12). Total was about $20. Soccer was on TV over at the lounge side. (uh-oh writer's block, need some Tony Robbins inspiration, .....must watch video)
