Wang Ga Ma @ HMart - Seymour & Robson

New Korean food market behind Capitol 6. You can get your kim chis with your cellphones here. There's also a small food area where you can choose between Japanese, Chinese and Korean food. I had the mixed vegetable rice with egg with kimchi on the side for $9.10. You order your food, then wait for it. Watch out for the heavy and hot stoneware-like bowls.

Omnitsky Delicatessen - Cambie & 42nd

Had a craving for something different. Tried this Jewish deli on Cambie, next door to Sumerai Sushi. Had Montreal smoked meat on carraway bread. The meat was piled up on the bread. While it was somewhat salty, it was ok.

Kiniski's Tavern - Point Roberts

Kiniski's Tavern again. Spotted Canada's Greatest Athlete - Gene Kiniski. He must be 70 -80 years old now. He was huge in All-Star wrestling back in the 60's and 70's. This was before WWF and pay per view. I believe his son Nick owns the pub now.

Given the brilliant sunshine outside, we sat out on the patio. It became sunburn city. To assuage my misgivings of not putting on suntan lotion, I had 3 beers (2 Alaskan ambers, 1 Coors) + fish & chips ($8.75). The amber was $4.75Cdn. As I paid only $13.50 plus tip, it looks like I will buy the rounds next time.

There was also entertainment. The feeding of eagles at 4pm, every Friday - Sunday. There were a couple eagles and they soared, ever majestically, and dove at the pieces of chicken being tossed onto the water.

Only in Point Roberts.

Boathouse - Richmond

Another birthday get together. This time, we go to the Boathouse in Richmond where the Keg feel is still prevalent. I believe this was a Keg before and now it's part of the Spectra Group.
Since the last time at the Keg, I missed out on the steak and had ordered the filet mignon, I decided on steak (centre cut NY steak $25.99, medium) right away. And also a Granville Island honey lager.

Had some bruschetta appetizer and a spoonful of tiramisu for dessert.

Overall it was a great meal. The sun was shining and slowly setting.

Outside people were having their oysters over a bottle of wine. Got to try that sometimes.

Spicy Court - 41st & Cambie

Had to fight through a coterie of older Chinese people to our table at this dim sum restaurant near Oakridge for our Father's day lunch.

It was so busy that service was not only lacking, but also brusque. I was carrying my 5-month old nephew around to check out the fish tank, when I was pushed by a waiter. We asked for a couple more settings, and another waiter carrying some chopsticks, plates, cups in a tray basically said look i'm busy in a harassed manner. To top it off, there was no refill of tea.

Actually, the dim sum was actually good and plentiful. The bad service spoiled everything.

Sushi Cafe - Seymour near Georgia

Cafeteria style, serves some of the larger portions of sushi in the Downtown area. Spartan surroundings. Reasonable pricing. Ambience: the buzz of students and value-conscious diners.

Shanghai Palace - Granville & 64th Ave

I like this place, small & home-y in the Marpole area. The 'siu lone bows' (steamed dumplings) are to die for. Ten to an order and with minute amount of soup inside just waiting to fill your palate. A meal for 6 including assorted seafood crispy rice, minced duck meat with lettuce wraps, a vegetable dish and 'nien go' - chewy slices of rice noodle will cost you roughly $65 with tip. Recommended.

Martini's Restaurant - Broadway

It's 1030pm after BC Lions game, where do you go? You could stay downtown and let traffic die down or you drive quickly to Martini's on Broadway to beat the traffic - the traffic to Martini's, that is. (Actually, post game traffic disburses quite quickly, 15-20 minutes, then it's ghost town.)

We had a pitcher of Sleeman's honey lager - very good. Had my usual steak sandwich with fries and salad. Normally, I don't rave about salad but the salad here is quite good. It has small pieces of pineapple in it. It's like finding a hidden gem.

To me, Martini's has always been a gem.
